Senior UI Designer

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
The Blackboard Product Development team has a proven track record of delivering high quality products to our customer base. We are looking for a motivated, skilled, quality minded, and detail oriented individual to join our Washington, D.C. team. The User Interface Designer will play an integral role in the success of the group. Specifically s/he will be responsible for:

• Being one of the experts on front-end "Web 2.0" interface development.
• Designing and developing production-ready front-end code for new features and feature enhancements based on requirements from Product Management that are exciting, highly usable and meet accessibility standards.
• Quickly designing and developing front-end prototypes for user testing/validation of new feature development and feature enhancements.
• Designing and development of interfaces for demonstration of a particular user experience for messaging purposes (e.g. design for a product whose functional requirements do no yet exist).
• Creating standards-compliant and accessible code and provide guidance to others on meeting accessibility standards including Section 508 and WAI.
• Creating and effectively using interaction design requirements and documentation (e.g., wireframes, sitemaps, etc.).
• Working with engineering, user interface designers and others to develop and promote best practices.
• Some icon development for new features.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED SKILLS:
• Ability to meet ambitious deadlines and deliver high-quality work on schedule with multiple projects running simultaneously
• 4-6 years of experience in web design
• Proven, exceptional knowledge of "Web 2.0" design and development
• HTML and CSS Expert
• Intermediate, prototype level use of JavaScript (full Ajax not required but being able to demonstrate front-end interactions in prototypes is necessary)
• Working knowledge of Section 508 and WAI standards and how to apply them
• Demonstrated understanding of how implementation decisions impact user experience in terms of browser and platform compatibility, accessibility, internationalization and performance.
• Demonstrated leadership skills, communication, analytical and problem solving skills
• Ability to work independently and with a team and see a project through from start to completion
• Fluency in written and spoken English
PREFERRED SKILLS:
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field
• Some experience in web application development
• Experience in an agile development process with prototypes included in repeatable process
• Experience in the education industry and e-learning technologies
• Experience working closely with development to streamline engineering processes according to user experience requirements
• Ajax
• Icon development
